Many businesses cut corners to maximize profits, bypassing environmental regulations. As a result, eco-activists must constantly raise awareness and demand action to protect the planet.

Brooklyn is home to both industrial enterprises and a strong community of environmental activists. Over the years, Brooklyn residents have organized striking protests to draw attention to ecological concerns and influence authorities. Recently, some demonstrations and rallies have begun to cross legal boundaries, with activists committing minor offenses to attract public and media attention.

In Germany, a trend has emerged among climate activists to glue their hands to works of art as a form of protest that cannot be easily ignored.

Margaret Salamon, a clinical psychologist based in Brooklyn, actively supports environmental activists. She raises funds from outside sponsors and directs them toward financing various protests. However, Salamon insists that she never funds illegal actions. Her demonstrations remain peaceful and within the boundaries of the law.

One of the most striking actions supported by Salamon targeted global warming. Eco-activists organized a protest on kayaks around the floating home of West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. Manchin had cast the deciding vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, the strictest climate law in U.S. history.

In 2014, Salamon introduced the concept of a “climate emergency” into environmental discourse. Her influence in the fight against climate change cannot be overstated. Her financial support has helped mobilize local environmental activists, turning their protests into a nightmare for some senators and politicians.

Chuck Schumer vs. the Pipeline

The controversy surrounding the National Grid North Brooklyn pipeline is one of the most high-profile environmental disputes in Brooklyn’s history. The conflict began in 2019 when construction of the pipeline raised not only concerns about inconvenience for residents but also serious environmental violations. The project breached multiple climate laws and threatened environmental justice, as its construction required hydraulic fracturing of the ground.

Many Brooklyn residents actively opposed the pipeline, but the protest led by Brooklyn-born Senator Chuck Schumer became the defining moment of the movement.

The situation was further complicated by a gas rate hike proposal from the Department of Public Service in August 2021. The increase in gas prices would have indirectly funded the pipeline’s construction, making opposition even more urgent.

The main protest took place in Greenpoint, where Schumer, along with other legislators, openly opposed the project. He argued that it violated the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), passed in 2019, which aimed to transition to clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, significantly improving air quality.

Despite ongoing protests since 2019—and even support from the Mayor of New York—construction of the pipeline continued.

The National Grid developers skillfully defended the project, claiming they were not violating any laws and had a duty to provide reliable energy for residents.

Another major protest against the pipeline took place outside Brooklyn Borough Hall. A resident of East Williamsburg stated during the demonstration that their neighborhood was already overburdened with environmental hazards and that the pipeline would only make things worse.

Say No to Plastic!

In 2016, an environmental coalition in Greenpoint launched an innovative plastic container reuse program to reduce waste. The initiative allowed customers at participating restaurants and food vendors to choose reusable containers instead of disposable ones.

The process worked as follows:

A customer purchases food in a reusable container.

Instead of discarding it, they return it to the restaurant, where it is washed in specialized sterilizing machines.

The container is reused, significantly reducing plastic waste.

The first businesses to join the program were Anella and Toro Ironwork’s. This initiative aimed to cut waste production and lower costs associated with manufacturing disposable containers.

The pilot project assumed that many people ordered food from the same restaurants repeatedly, making it convenient to return containers. However, some smaller items and soups were still packaged in disposable containers.

Reusable containers were marked differently from disposable ones, ensuring easy identification. The program relied on customers acting responsibly—if someone wasn’t willing to return the container, they were advised not to participate.

Studies showed that a single reusable container could be used up to 360 times, significantly reducing plastic waste.

Since the rise of plastic production, the world’s oceans have suffered immense pollution. Initiatives like these can help reverse environmental damage and create a more sustainable future.

Environmental issues often take a backseat when big money is involved.
