The primary occupation of its residents was fishing, and during the summer months, crowds of men gathered along the water’s edge with homemade fishing rods. As Brooklyn expanded, so did the fishing industry, driven by the growing population and increasing demand for food.

In 1880, the Coney Island Jockey Club established a racetrack in the bay, attracting a large number of horse racing fans to the area. Many of them became fascinated by Sheepshead Bay’s fishing culture, and soon, new seafood restaurants began appearing, especially along Emmons Avenue. These eateries flourished, with fresh fish and shellfish becoming their signature dishes.

Business was booming, leading to the deepening of the bay to allow safer passage for fishing boats. This, in turn, facilitated the introduction of ferry services in the early 1900s. In 1916, city authorities further dredged the channel, improving access to the bay and transforming Sheepshead Bay into a full-fledged fishing hub that also contributed to the city’s economic growth.

A New Era

As Sheepshead Bay grew in popularity, the number of residential buildings increased, and many homeowners needed storage for their boats. This led to the establishment of Brooklyn’s first yacht clubs in the 1930s. One of the oldest, Club Miramar, opened in 1932 on Emmons Avenue. The bay’s identity gradually shifted from fishing to sports and recreation, as luxury yachts and regattas became more common.

During World War II, Sheepshead Bay housed a naval base. While large-scale commercial fishing operations were halted, local fishermen continued their trade, supplying food to soldiers and earning a living. After the war, the yacht club resumed its activities, and the bay maintained its role as a fishing and boating destination.

By the 1960s, fishing made a significant comeback in Sheepshead Bay. A well-known local figure, Edna “Lady Di” Dee, introduced new fishing regulations to revive the industry. In 1962, a fisherman named Mr. Moran caught a 44-pound cod, rekindling interest in recreational fishing. The area also saw the emergence of new bait and tackle shops, with Bernie’s Bait & Tackle becoming one of the most popular.

Sheepshead Bay is home to some of the most fascinating marine life, including whales. Boat tours now operate in the bay, allowing visitors to observe these magnificent creatures without having to travel far north.

By the late 20th century, Sheepshead Bay saw an influx of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, largely due to its proximity to Brighton Beach. This demographic shift played a key role in shaping the area. Unlike many other Brooklyn neighborhoods, Sheepshead Bay had lower crime rates, primarily due to its predominantly white population at the time.

Over time, the bay became a popular retirement community, leading to a decline in recreational fishing. To counteract this downturn, city authorities took measures to revitalize the waterfront.

The growing influx of tourists and visitors spurred the hospitality industry, with hotels and restaurants flourishing. Some of these establishments, just like in the past, continued to specialize in seafood, taking full advantage of the bay’s rich marine resources.

Emmons Avenue remains home to a famous fish market, where fresh seafood is available for purchase. Despite the industrialization of the fishing industry, Sheepshead Bay continues to support small, private fishing vessels and independent fish traders, keeping its legacy alive well into the 21st century.

Brooklyn offers numerous fishing spots, and some of them were once thriving hubs of commercial fishing.
