What you write to a boy turning four and what you write to a boy turning eleven are not the same message with a different number swapped in: the first one gets read out loud by somebody else while he is already halfway up the furniture, and the second gets read once, quietly, by a kid who notices exactly how you talk to him. So the wishes below are sorted by age first — three to five, six to nine, ten to twelve — and then by who is doing the writing, because Mom and Dad, grandparents and an aunt or uncle all have different things they are allowed to say. Now go have some fun.

Questions and answers

Age is the whole axis here. Does a boy turning seven really need different words than a boy turning five?

Yes, and the difference is bigger than vocabulary. At five the message is heard, not read: somebody else reads it out loud while he is distracted, so it needs short sentences, a number he can picture, and something happening in it. At seven he reads it himself, slowly, and he reads it more than once, which means an inside detail is worth more than an exclamation point. By ten or eleven the risk flips entirely. A kid that age can tell when an adult is talking down to him, and cheerful baby-talk is the fastest way to get a card set aside. Write to him the way you would talk to him at the table, keep the compliment specific, and let him have one line that is just funny.

Four different adults are writing to the same kid on the same morning. How do you keep the cards from repeating each other?

Split the material by what only you can say. Parents own the year that just happened and the story of the day he was born. Grandparents own the long view, the comparison across generations, and the standing invitation to come over. An aunt or uncle owns the alliance: on his side, not in charge, allowed to be a little subversive about the house rules. Friends of the family own the short warm line and nothing more. Beyond the roles, one concrete detail does the dividing on its own, because no two adults saw the same thing this year. Name the moment you were actually there for, and the four cards will not overlap even if every one of them ends with the same good wish.

Should the message name what he is into right now, when he will have moved on by fall?

Name it. Being seen is most of what a kid gets out of a card, and nothing signals it faster than an adult who knows what he has been building, reading or practicing this month. The fact that it expires is not a problem, it is the appeal: a card that says you were deep into rockets that spring is a small time capsule, and it reads better in five years than a generic line would. Two guards keep it safe. Name what he does rather than labeling who he is, so a passing interest does not become an identity he has to keep up. And do not build the entire message on it, or a kid who quit that thing last month ends up holding a card about somebody he no longer is.

Can you say how much he has grown this year without it turning into a report card?

You can, as long as you point at effort and not at results. Grades, wins, times and finishes belong to a scoreboard, and a boy who had a rough season reads them as a verdict. What travels safely is behavior he chose: he kept going after the frustrating part, he apologized first, he sat with a kid who was on his own, he tried something in front of people knowing he might not be good at it yet. None of that requires him to have come out ahead of anyone. The same rule keeps two other things out of a child’s card entirely: anything about his body or how he looks, and any sentence that measures him against another child, including his own brother or sister.

He keeps his birthday cards in a box under the bed. Does that change how you write one?

It should. A kept card has two readers: the boy today and the same person years from now, going through the box. Write one line for each. The first is whatever makes him grin this afternoon. The second is a plain sentence about what he was like at this age, in the present tense, because that is the part nobody else will have written down. Sign with the name he actually calls you rather than a formal one, so the box does not turn into a puzzle later. And leave out anything you would want back: a joke about a phase he is going through, or a nudge about something he needs to work on, has a very long shelf life when it is sitting in a box in a kid’s own handwriting pile.

The blank space inside a kid’s birthday card is deceptively hard.
