Everybody else gets the polite version, the safe line about cake and candles, the joke that could be read out in an office. She was there for the haircut, the phase, the argument in the driveway and the year nobody in the family talks about, and she has exactly as much material on you as you have on her. That is the whole difference: a birthday message to a sister is allowed to be blunt, because bluntness between the two of you is a form of affection and always has been. What follows is written from inside that history. There are wishes for a big sister who ran interference, a little sister who told on you constantly and grew up anyway, a twin who has never once had a birthday to herself, and a sister-in-law who arrived late and somehow became family faster than anyone expected. Short ones for a text, longer ones for the card, and a few to say out loud at the table. Growing up, she got the bigger room, the better report cards and most of the attention. I got a sister who has never let me down once. Best deal anybody in that house made. To you.

6
Hands up if she has ever helped you move. Right, that is most of the room. Honestly that is the entire speech. Happy birthday, and somebody find her a chair.

7
Two things. First, thank you all for coming. Second, if she tells the story about me and the trampoline later tonight, none of it is true and there has never been any proof. To my sister.

Questions and answers

The whole joke rests on something from when we were kids, and she remembers it completely differently. Does that matter?

It matters, and it is the most common way a sibling joke misfires. Two people who grew up in the same house rarely hold the same version of anything, and a punchline delivered as established fact invites her to correct it instead of laugh at it. The fix is to claim it as yours: the way I remember it, my version, according to me. That framing is funnier anyway, because it admits the argument is still open. Two memories are worth leaving alone entirely. Any story where her version makes her the one who got blamed unfairly, and anything the family is still quietly litigating, because a birthday is the wrong day to reopen a case she has been losing since she was nine.

The favorite-child joke: our parents will be standing right there. How far can you take that one?

It works because everybody in the family already suspects it is true, which is also why it turns sour fast. The version that lands claims the title for whoever is speaking or hands it to the birthday sister as a compliment. The version that does not is the one that sounds like it is settling a score, especially if there was a real imbalance growing up and everyone knows it. Read the room by age, too. Parents in their seventies hear this joke differently than parents in their fifties, and a sibling who genuinely got less attention will not find it funny no matter how it is phrased. If in doubt, make yourself the loser of the joke.

We are half-sisters and did not grow up in the same house, so the old stories are not there. What do you write instead?

Write from when the relationship actually started rather than pretending to a childhood you did not share. Sisters who met later have their own material, and it is usually better material because both of you chose it: the first holiday that was not awkward, the trip, the phone call at a bad hour, the moment one of you stopped being careful around the other. Name a specific one. It carries more weight than a reference to a bedroom you never shared. Skip the line about how you have been close forever, because she knows the timeline as well as you do, and the honest version — that you got here on purpose — is the stronger thing to say.

She is the big sister and still talks to me like I am nine. Can the birthday message push back on that?

It can, as a joke, and a birthday is actually the right day for it because the format protects you. Something in the shape of admitting she was right about a specific thing, then declining to admit it about anything else, says the whole thing without turning into a conversation neither of you wanted to have at a party. What does not work is a message with real complaint underneath it. She will hear the second layer immediately, because she has been reading you since you were small, and a wish that arrives with a grievance in it is the one she remembers. Keep the point in a single clause and go warm right after it.

Do you send the funny message and the sincere one separately, or make one message carry both?

One message, in that order, is the standard shape and it works because the joke lowers her guard and the sincere line lands while it is down. Three or four funny sentences, then one plain one you actually mean, then stop. The mistake is putting the sincere part first, where it feels like a preamble, or splitting them into two texts twenty minutes apart, which reads as though you thought better of the joke. If the sincere thing is genuinely big, that one belongs on paper. Send the funny message on the morning of, and let the card carry the sentence you would rather not say out loud.

Your sister is the one person you do not have to be careful with.
