Founding of the plant
The plant was launched by George Henning in 1896 in the backyard of his father’s farm on Belmont Avenue in Brooklyn. His brother Valentine Jr. joined it in 1900. Despite being more than a century old, the modern Belmont plant is located in the same place. At the beginning of its activity, the plant was known as V. Henning & Sons, one of the dealers in non-ferrous metals. From the very beginning, as a supplier of finished secondary materials, it expanded into the production of non-ferrous ingots. Belmont Metals products consisted of lead and zinc alloys. Then, they added solder, babbitt, brass and bronze. At that time, they provided a wide range of prepared and graded non-ferrous materials. In its decades of operation, the plant had developed a reputation as a diversified supplier, starting with lead and zinc ingots and adding solder, brass and bronze.
In the 1940s, a reorganization of the company took place. George Henning’s sons and daughter replaced him in the business. At that time, the plant celebrated its 50th anniversary. A decade and a half later, the plant was able to become a leading supplier to the US government and develop its business abroad. It expanded its Brooklyn factory, which is now approaching 100,000 square feet.
