Prospect Park Lake

Prospect Park is one of Brooklyn’s public parks. The total area of the park covers 2.1 km. There are a variety of corners of living nature. Prospect Park is renowned for the largest meadow in the United States (90 acres), a zoo, a summer stage and a historic building. But for lovers of slow evening walks, this park is valuable for another thing, the lake. This is the only lake in Brooklyn. It was created by park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. They artificially created a lake and a system of streams. Unfortunately, the original appearance of the lake and streams was not preserved until the 21st century. In 1994, a 43 million dollar park restoration project was launched. The whole project took 25 years.

The waterway of Prospect Park begins at Fallkill Falls before flowing into Fallkill Pool and then through Upper and Lower Pools. Migratory birds and marsh plants liked this place. Running under the Esdale Bridge and flowing into Ambergill Pond, the water joins the wooded area. On the path of the Brooklyn lake designers created small bridges, over which Brooklyn citizens can walk freely. The waterway was designed in such a way that its noise could be heard from any corner of the forest.

There is a boat station on the lake, which provides services for boat rentals and water walks. In such a way, you can contemplate the shores of Prospect Park.

Prospect Lake was once the dirtiest one in the city. But it was cleaned and 20 species of fish were run there. In addition to the fact that this is a favorite vacation spot, fishermen hold competitions on the lake every year. To create Brooklyn Lake, the designers had not only to plant trees but also push stones and change the external terrain.

A piece of the East River

Despite the name, East River is a terrestrial strait and the natural border of Manhattan and Bronx with Brooklyn and Queens. The East River is 26 kilometers long. Eight railway and road bridges cross the strait. Among them is the famous Brooklyn Bridge.

But for Brooklyn citizens another thing is valuable — the opportunity to walk along the East River promenades.

One of the main East River promenades in Brooklyn is located in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Equipped walking areas and specially planted lawns allow not only to relax with friends, watching how transport ships pass by, but also to see a beautiful view of the city.

Little Odessa beach

The designers of the beach on Brighton Beach planned to turn it into a resort for the rich. But the Great Depression and World War II changed everything. Brighton Beach became one of the poorest neighborhoods not only in Brooklyn but in the whole city.

The width of the beach is 100 meters. It is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. For those who are not afraid to swim in the ocean waters, this beach is ideally suited, as there is no big drop in depth. Another advantage is the lack of big waves, which makes Brighton Beach safe for children.

Brooklyn citizens love to visit this beach. It is quite crowded during the season. But due to its size, nobody bothers anyone. Despite the fact that entrance to the park is free, its territory has everything you need: a toilet, showers and drinking water. There are also towers with lifeguards. In addition to standard recreation, on the beach one can play volleyball, ride on water attractions and kayaks.

A promenade was built for hiking, and it separates the sandy strip from the neighborhood. There are many cafes, clubs and restaurants.
