Wind energy. An eco-development project of Norwegian oil industry workers and Brooklyn environmentalists. What makes this possible?

Throughout the history of mankind, people have learned to use all of nature’s gifts. Not only those that are hidden in the ground. Scientists have created machines that accumulate the power of wind, surf and waves. Wind turbines are frequently encountered in the field. But what’s it like in Brooklyn? Find out more at brooklyn-name.

Unexpected collaboration

2022 saw the emergence of an unusual enterprise in Brooklyn, which sparked the interest of eco-activists. Sunset Park has commenced construction on an offshore wind power company. It was decided to take place on the embankment of Sunset Park. At the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, to be specific. An excellent spot for such a venture.

It all started with Joe Biden’s promise to develop a strong climate program with additional employment opportunities. Biden sought to end climate injustice and find a way to transition away from fossil fuels toward newer, greener alternatives. The 46th President of the United States very gradually carried through his promises. Although many environmentalists and politicians believed that Sunset Park is an ideal location for such eco-developments.

In January 2022, the governor of New York declared the ambition of the Norwegian energy corporation Equinor to develop two offshore wind farms. As a result, Brooklyn residents forged a friendship with the Norwegian company. This collaboration resulted in the notion of producing electricity in an environmentally beneficial manner.

Development center

The Brooklyn site will serve as a regional hub for offshore wind energy development. In order to construct the station, it was necessary to transport materials from Albany to Brooklyn over the Hudson River. It was in Albany that the turbine towers were constructed. The turbines were designed to provide enough electricity to power 1.3 million homes. It is worth noting that the construction was funded by the state budget, and the Norwegians intended to conduct training and assist in attracting labor forces.

A station like this would mark the start of full-scale green production in Sunset Park. This would assist in replacing the area’s dirty production facilities while also creating more high-paying jobs.

This is not the first attempt to generate green energy in Sunset Park. There is a waste-processing facility nearby. It gets its power from a wind turbine. The offshore wind power plant will be built next to the wind turbine and will help it cover the borough’s needs. Moreover, it is going to replace the fossil fuel-powered stations.

The construction of such a large-scale project would aid in the restoration of Sunset Park’s former economic greatness. It was previously a bustling trading center. For sailors, in particular. There were numerous warehouses and transshipment points in this area. Thousands of people, including immigrants, worked in Sunset Park’s ports. But everything changed in the mid-twentieth century. The downfall of the district began. Additionally, many people have forgotten Sunset Park’s maritime history since the Gowanus Expressway opened. Instead of shops, a line of heavy trucks stretched down the street. The large marine terminal was closed in the 1960s. The empty square was reconstructed to serve different purposes. Thousands of people lost their jobs. So the neighborhood began to drown in gentrification. The windport should be able to save the situation and partially reverse time. Sunset Park’s future lies in wind energy development.

UPROSE

UPROSE was the first public organization to raise concerns about a Norwegian oil refinery proposal. They frequently enlightened the public about the issue of filthy production and its impact on the environment. They are ardent supporters of green development and renewable energy. It’s not for nothing that they’re concerned. After all, the Sunset Park neighborhood has one of the worst air quality ratings in the entire borough. The same is true for the entry of solid particles into the air due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy production. The percentage of cases of respiratory illnesses is 10% greater in this area of New York than elsewhere in the state.

Sunset Park was not picked at random. It meets all of the standards, including residents who are concerned about the environment. There is a perfect coastal wind and a wide continental plume with shallow water. Furthermore, there is free real estate and large areas that are empty on the territory of the terminal in South Brooklyn. The original structures were reinforced and modified to accommodate modern large cranes. It is tough to find a suitable location for such a massive project. Particularly in a large city like New York. Therefore, the Norwegian corporation is taking this matter seriously. They intend to carry out similar projects all over the world. However, some Brooklyn residents are skeptical of oil companies and their commitment to help. They believe that if you want to help the environment, you should just cease producing oil. But where do you obtain your electricity, fuel and jobs? After all, one of the main industries is oil refining. It employs millions of people. Before you give up something, you must find a suitable replacement. Otherwise, humanity will descend into the Dark Ages.

The executive director of the UPROSE environmental justice organization, Elizabeth Yeampierre, is one of those who don’t trust the oil company. She is concerned about the process of switching to renewable energy. Will the hands of those who are solely interested in sucking the bowels of the planet corrupt this pure idea? Will wind and green energy become their new oil?

However, not everyone shares Elizabeth’s concerns. Many individuals have high hopes for Equinor. So they are waiting for the promised implementation of the green energy transition. Furthermore, they are willing to cooperate with any company to do this.

Difficult fight

Back in the 1990s, UPROSE began talking about transitioning to green energy, and the first steps were made to carry out their objectives.  The eco-group devised a concept to build a public solar power plant. Which took years to construct. They also fiercely defended the area surrounding the marine terminal. This plot of land has long been desired by New York developers for the construction of another elite complex. UPROSE has known about it for a long time and has seen a great perspective in it.

Public figures were also involved in issues concerning the district’s zoning. Residents were not allowed to forget its old appearance. Only in this manner did they recall environmental issues and, as a result, would contribute to achieving the desired future.

In 2019, the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act was passed. It was the final indication for the start of full-scale wind power development.

Unfortunately, there is a catch. Everyone can agree that wind energy is far cleaner than the one used before. However, it is not completely safe for the environment. Some wind turbines are erected on the coast during the development of wind farms. This may have an impact on the population of some birds, fishing and other activities in the future. After all, many animals are easily affected by turbine vibrations. However, it remains a powerful and promising concept. We must select the least problematic option.

In the case of installing wind turbines in fields, however, biologists have frequently explored the issue of their impact on fauna. Several rodents and bats were particularly susceptible. They can also have an adverse effect on marine life. Environmentalists are once again faced with a dilemma. Mineral energy generation is more damaging than wind turbines. However, their impact on the world around them has yet to be properly investigated.

As of 2023, this is Brooklyn’s most prospective and large-scale eco-development. Wind power has long been acknowledged as the future of energy production. Also, unlike fossils, the wind will not end.
