Electric cars significantly help the environment as they pollute the air and affect the climate much less than gasoline-powered cars. This is true, despite the fact that much of New York’s electricity network is still powered by fossil fuels. Read about this environmentally friendly transport and its utilization in Brooklyn on brooklyn-name.com.
An electric car is environmentally friendly

As the borough’s electricity network becomes cleaner, meaning more renewable energy becomes available, electric vehicles also become cleaner. One of the problems with them is the extraction of minerals necessary for the manufacture and operation of batteries. It is real and needs to be solved. Even so, the advantages of electric cars are simply enormous. An average-sized electric car produces 60-68% less greenhouse gas emissions throughout its lifetime than a car that runs on gas.
There is also good news regarding batteries. There are already striking opportunities for reusing and recycling them. Some companies are already utilizing used EV batteries that can still hold some charge to store electricity generated by solar panels. Up to 95% of electric vehicle batteries can be recycled so that critical minerals are ready for use in them again.
The situation with the use of electric cars in the borough can be discussed in the example of the Brooklyn micro-mobility and infrastructure company Revel. It has already celebrated its millionth trip on electric cars.
Network of electric charging stations

Revel works on a relatively new and exciting mission to build electric vehicle charging infrastructure in New York and other American cities. With it, cars of Revels or other companies, as well as private cars will have easy access to efficient charging. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provided $2.5 billion to pay for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Developers like Revel can tap into those funds. In addition, the city extended the $7,500 IRA tax credit. This was done to encourage more electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and pave the way for a cleaner future.
The company estimates that 1 million EV trips would offset approximately 1,844 metric tons of carbon emissions in New York City. A 2019 report found that the city’s fleet of licensed vehicles, including taxis and cars from companies like Uber and Lyft, emitted more than 1.6 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses a year. As of January 2019, app-based for-hire vehicles made up the bulk of the city’s taxi fleet. That means that of the 135,398 rental vehicles on city streets more than 88,000 were linked to ride-hailing apps. In early 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced that all Uber and Lyft fleets would have to go fully electric and hire only electric car owners by 2030. By the way, this initiative was supported by both motor transport companies.
The millionth trip by electric car

In April 2023, Revel opened its latest planned EV charging station in South Williamsburg. From now on, there is a kind of super hub in Brooklyn. It includes 15 public stations for charging electric cars, capable of charging at a rate of up to 150 kilowatt-hours. The Williamsburg station, like the original flagship in Bed Stuy, is open to visitors 24 hours a day with no admission charge for any brand of electric vehicle.
A charging super hub in south Williamsburg is the first of the new Revel facilities to be completed. Three more are to come, including a 60-station charging hub in Queens, a 30-station center in the South Bronx and 10 stations in Lower Manhattan.
Revel became famous for its electric moped rentals. It has a fleet of about 300 active electric vehicles, including Tesla Model Ys, Model 3s and Kia Niro EVs. They travel throughout the five boroughs of New York, including Brooklyn, parts of northern New Jersey and to or from the city’s three major airports.
As a company born in Brooklyn, Revel is very proud to have made its millionth trip in a zero-emission electric vehicle and to demonstrate how electrification is progressing in New York City. Thanks to the historic Inflation Reduction Act passed by Senator Schumer and the Biden administration, Brooklyn-based Revel can help New York and other US cities get access to electric cars faster, reducing traffic emissions and improving local air quality.
